BOMBERS HUMBLE
SPARTANS
Tuesday 15th
December 2009
By Chris Boyes
The Bull Creek Leeming Amateur Football Club
has beaten the Leeming Spartans Cricket Club in
the inaugural Twenty20 Xmas Match between the
two local sides.
The match was a great success with both clubs
deciding to get together for the occasion as
they had originally scheduled separate games for
the same date.
After happily agreeing to field first, the
Bombers got on top in the game after taking the
pace of the ball by utilising the side’s slower
bowlers with immediate effect.
This combined with an amazing all round effort
in the field, the Creek produced 3 run outs, 2
stunners from Trent Ovens, restricted the home
team to 129.
Shane Thompson, Pri Quackenbush, Karl Jardine,
Chris Boyes, Mitch Gillam, Darren Humble and
Paul Petkovich each picked up a wicket.
Petkovich and Humble also opened the batting
getting the run chase off to a blistering start
until Bull Creek Leeming’s very own Mitch Lane,
representing the Spartans struck twice in a
short space of time.
This however brought Trent Ovens to the crease
and he and Humble combined to take the Creek to
the brink of victory.
Ovens was dismissed with the end in sight but
Humble continued on his merry way notching up an
unbeaten half century and hitting the winnings
runs.
The Bombers were victorious by 7 wickets with 14
balls to spare.
During the ceremonies, Shane Thompson was
introduced to the crowd as the new League Coach
of the Bombers for the 2010 season.
Thompson has wasted little time making changes
with Pre Season training due to start on January
11 with sessions scheduled for Monday, Wednesday
and Friday.
The Bombers will be hoping to be open for
business on Friday nights to create some early
atmosphere around the club in a bid to form a
formidable playing group for the season ahead.
